Alexander Santiago-Jirau
ALEXANDER SANTIAGO-JIRAU is an educator, advocate and theatre artist committed to the use of theatre for youth and community development. He is Senior Program Associate for the Career Development Program at The Center for Arts Education (www.caenyc.org), where he counsels youth pursuing arts careers and leads professional development workshops for New York City public school educators. Alex has been a Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner for eight years, studying and working with Augusto Boal and facilitating multiple theatre workshops with queer youth, youth in foster care, and diverse immigrant communities. He is President of the Board of Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed, Inc. (www.ptoweb.org), a national organization devoted to the work of work of liberatory educators, activists, artists, and community organizers. After receiving a degree in Urban Studies from Cornell University, Alex has worked in neighborhood planning, environmental justice, teacher recruitment at Teach For America, youth development at Mentoring USA and commercial theatre at Richard Frankel Productions. Alex is co-founder of The Forum Project, a training and facilitation company that designs custom workshops, community projects, performances and trainings for a wide range of communities and social justice issues. He is a Board and company member of The Rep @ NYU, a member of the American Alliance for Theatre & Education, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and the National Popular Culture Association. Alex is a recipient of Repertorio Español's Van Lier Young Directors Fellowship. Currently, he is a Master's candidate in Educational Theatre at New York University, focusing on applied theatre and drama in education.
